Carlos Ruiz headed to 15-day DL - ESPN

Updated: May 20, 2013, 6:50 PM ET

Associated Press

MIAMI -- Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and first baseman Ryan Howard is day to day with a sore left knee.

Both players had MRI exams on Monday before Philadelphia's game against Miami.

Ruiz has a Grade 2 hamstring strain. He has played in 16 games and is hitting .235 with two RBIs.

"Right now he'll probably be out three to four weeks -- relative time frame," Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan said. "That's kind of what we're thinking right now based on the size of the tear and location."

Howard has had symptoms for the past couple of weeks and is hitting .179 in 16 games this month.

"He's got some changes in his meniscus in his knee and also has some inflammation in his knee that concerns us," Sheridan said. "We did a cortisone injection with him (Sunday) and he's not available to play tonight and we will just treat him day to day right now and go from there."

Howard is batting .245 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 41 games. He has been replaced at first base by Michael Young.

"If he doesn't respond to the treatment we've provided so far, you've got to re-evaluate what you're doing," Sheridan said. "At no point are we going to put Ryan out there to risk it."

Right-handed pitcher Mike Adams (back strain) was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 11. Catcher Humberto Quintero has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ken Venturi dies: CBS golf analyst remembered for 1964 US Open win (+video) - Christian Science Monitor

Ken Venturi dies: After a long career both on and just above the golf course, Ken Venturi dies Friday in his native California.

KenVenturi, who overcame dehydration to win the 1964 U.S. Open and spent 35 years in the booth for CBS Sports, died Friday afternoon.

His son, Matt Venturi, said he died in a hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif., 12 days after he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

He couldn't make it to the induction. His sons, Matt and Tim, accepted on his behalf after an emotional tribute by Jim Nantz, who worked alongside Venturi at CBS.

"When dad did receive the election into the Hall of Fame, he had a twinkle in his eye, and that twinkle is there every day," Tim Venturi said that night.

Venturi was all about overcoming the odds.

A prominent amateur who grew up in San Francisco, he captured his only major in the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, the last year the final round was 36 holes. In oppressive heat, Venturi showed signs of dehydration and a doctor recommended he stop playing because it could be fatal. Venturi pressed on to the finish, closed with a 70 and was heard to say, "My God, I've won the U.S. Open."

He had a severe stuttering problem as a child, yet went on to become one of the familiar voices in golf broadcasting. He began working for CBS in 1968 and lasted 35 years.

"We all knew what a wonderful player KenVenturi was, and how he fashioned a second successful career as an announcer," Jack Nicklaus said. "But far more important than how good he was at playing the game or covering it, Ken was my friend. Ken was fortunate in that the game of golf gave him so much, but without question, Ken gave back far more to the game he loved than he ever gained from it. Over the years, Ken developed a circle of friends that is enormous and whose collective heart is heavy today."

Venturi played on one Ryder Cup team and was US captain in the 2000 Presidents Cup.

As an amateur, he was the 54-hole leader in the 1956 Masters until closing with an 80, and he was runner-up at Augusta National in 1960 to Arnold Palmer, who birdied the last two holes.

Venturi was born May 15, 1931, in San Francisco, and he developed his game at Harding Park Golf Course. He won the California State Amateur at Pebble Beach in 1951 and 1956, while serving in the Army in Korea between those two amateur titles.

His stammering problem is what led him to golf.

"When I was 13 years old, the teacher told my mother, 'I'm sorry, Mrs. Venturi, but your son will never be able to speak. He's an incurable stammerer,'" Venturi said in 2011. "My mother asked me what I planned to do. I said, 'I'm taking up the loneliest sport I know,' and picked up a set of hickory shaft across the street from a man and went to Harding Park and played my first round of golf."

Powerball jackpot: Millions of number combos still unclaimed - Los Angeles Times

In the run-up to what could be a record-setting Powerball jackpot, officials say that slightly more than half of the possible number combinations have been sold.

Though ticket sales are expected to continue steadily through Saturday, the figures as of Friday morning leave open the significant possibly that the jackpot will again roll over. California Lottery spokesman Alex Traverso said that if it does, players could by vying for a $1-billion jackpot next week.

The odds of winning Powerball are about 1 in 175 million, which means there are approximately 175 million possible number combinations. To win the jackpot, players must match five numbers along with the Powerball number.

Traverso said that on the night of the record-setting $656-million Mega Millions draw in March of 2012, about 95% of the number combinations had been claimed.

Because Powerball is a $2 game, officials said that the jackpots can rise faster with relatively fewer tickets ' and number combinations ' being sold.

'We have a darn good chance of seeing this thing roll,' said Richard Lustig, author of 'Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery.'

Lustig has won seven lottery game grand prizes and raked in more than $1 million. He generally discourages players from buying 'Quick Pick' tickets ' in which a computer randomly spits out a number combination.

Instead, he encourages players to pick a set of numbers, do research to see if it is a good set, and then play the same set during every draw.

But he said it's too late for that now.

'Someone trying to get into the game at the last minute and win ' they're just foolish,' he said. 'This late in the game, write numbers on a wall and throw darts, and pick the first six numbers you hit.'

'Grey's Anatomy' season finale post-mortem: Shonda Rhimes on Calizona, Owen ... - Entertainment Weekly

Grey's Anatomy's season finale was everything you'd expect from a Grey's Anatomy season finale, filled with tension, action, heartbreak ' and even a possible death!

Note: We said possible because the fate of Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), who last night was electrocuted and last seen on the floor in a desolate part of the hospital, was left up in the air. So have we said goodbye to yet another member of our beloved team of doctors? 'That's such an interesting question! I love that people are asking that question,' Rhimes told EW last night at an event at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that honored the second season finale of her latest hit drama Scandal. 'I'm not going to answer it because I like that it's a question. I will tell you that you will see Jim Pickens again, but I'm not going to answer the question.'

A subject Rhimes definitely had some thoughts on, however, was the controversial marital troubles that befell Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Callie (Sara Ramirez), who last night had an emotional and heated confrontation after Callie learned about Arizona'sinfidelity. Rhimes says, 'I feel like a lot of LGBT characters on television ' and I hopefully don't fall into this category ' are sort of sanitized for our protection. They are happily in love and they hardly ever do anything wrong and they never cheat and they're never too sexual and they don't have any other storylines except about them being gay. I felt like I wanted to give them a complex storyline that wasn't about that.'

A prime opportunity to do so came from this season's storyline about Arizona's life as an amputee, which Rhimes says gave her a chance to showcase the physical and emotional effects of such a trauma ' and their relationship woes were an important component of that. 'I wanted to give them a rift and a real problem that wasn't just about something small. I wanted it to be complex and three-dimensional,' she says. 'And I loved having this thing at the beginning of the season ' Callie made a decision that saved Arizona's life ' and you get to the end of the season and clearly Arizona has been blaming her for this entire time. Really, that's what sort of sparked all this behavior.'

She adds: 'As far as I'm concerned, obviously, Arizona hasn't gotten over the trauma of what's happened to her [and] not just because she's blaming Callie. That's sort of the symptom of the problem. But Arizona lost a leg, she went through a terrible plane crash, and was lost in the woods. While we watched her be angry for a while, you know Meredith and Christina have been through more PTSD than anyone in the world and we've watched them learn how to deal with it ' I don't think Arizona has learned how to deal with it.'

Speaking of Cristina, the finale also saw a sad conclusion to her relationship with Owen (Kevin McKidd). After reconciling throughout the season, Cristina decided to leave Owen, for fear she was holding him back from starting the family she knew he wanted. 'I think Owen and Christina have been on a very very long journey that's been really complicated for both of them,' Rhimes says. 'I feel like there's a sense that this is the end of the journey that they've been on for two seasons that was sort of messed up by the fact that she was in the plane crash'.they were finally forced to have the conversation that neither of them wanted to have and it was a very honest conversation. She walked away and he did not follow, so how they're going to cope with that is going to be something.'

So it is safe to say the pair is done for good? 'Done on Grey's Anatomy is maybe different from many other shows and real life, so we'll see what happens,' Rhimes teases.(With reporting by Lindsey Bahr)

Tearful Jarrett Jack says he hopes to stay with Golden State Warriors - San Jose Mercury News

OAKLAND -- Warriors guard Jarrett Jack was on the verge of tears as he stood at his locker. He couldn't find the words to truly express what he was feeling, so he let his attire do the talking for him.

"Usually before I would do any media, I would make sure I was dressed a certain way," Jack said after the Warriors' season ended Thursday with a 94-82 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. "I brought one of my best suits. But looking down at this jersey, it's just a sense of pride I don't think I've ever felt as a professional. ... Nothing in my closet is better than what I have on now."

Perhaps it was the disappointing end to a magical run. Perhaps reality had hit him that he may have spent his last minutes in a

Warriors uniform. And he didn't want to take it off.

When the final horn had sounded, the Warriors shook hands with the Spurs and headed to the locker room. But Jack remained. He circled the court, a towel over his head, clapping with the fans. Before long, his teammates and coaches returned. They all took a bow at midcourt before guard Stephen Curry took the microphone and thanks the thousands of fans in yellow shirts remaining.

His future with the Warriors is uncertain. Jack, who made $5 million this season, will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He played a pivotal role in the Warriors' success as the backup point guard and the late-game ballhandler. So much so, Golden State reached out for extension talks back in

January, but Jack declined before talks could get going so he could focus on the season.

Based on his performance with the Warriors, Jack is expected to get several opportunities and lots of money on the free-agent market. Also complicating matters is the rise of rookie Harrison Barnes. An increased role for the starting small forward could mean a reduced role for Jack.

Whether he takes the more lucrative offer else where, or whether the Warriors make a competitive offer to keep him in the Bay Area, that will all be figured out this summer. But Jack was never more clear about for whom he wants to play: Golden State.

"I hope so, man," Jack said. "Obviously there are other things that go into seeing if that works -- we all know this is a business at the end of the day. If I could do it, if I could rearrange it, I would definitely be back at this same locker."

Ex-Disney worker accused of watching child porn released from jail, booted as ... - Orlando Sentinel

Cedric Eugene Cuthbert, pastor of the Historic St. James African' (OCJ, OCJ )

May 15, 2013|By Desiree Stennett, Orlando Sentinel

A custodial manager at Disney's Port Orleans resort is accused of watching child porn at work while writing an Easter sermon for a Sanford church where he is the pastor.

Cedric Eugene Cuthbert, pastor of the Historic St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in Sanford, worked for Disney for more than seven years before his arrest. He has since been fired.

An employee-relations manager at Disney was alerted last month when Cuthbert, 49, tried to access several blocked websites from his work computer, the manager told Orange County deputies.

Disney's monitoring system takes screen shots of employee computers every three seconds and recorded Cuthbert writing an Easter Sunday church sermon on John chapter 13 verses 1-35 and Psalm 148 while loading pornographic YouTube videos involving teenage girls.

That portion of the book of John tells the story of Jesus' prediction of Judas' betrayal and Psalm 148 tells all people to praise the Lord above all else.

Cuthbert faces charges of possession of material including sexual conduct by a child and soliciting a child for unlawful sexual conduct using a computer.

According the his arrest affidavit, Cuthbert wrote a letter of apology to Disney officials, but there were no details about what was in the letter. He also told investigators that he didn't specifically search for child porn. Instead, he said he simply opened links that were sent to him via YouTube, the report states.

Cuthbert worked an overnight shift at the Disney resort from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. the arrest affidavit states. He logged in with his employee credentials during a time when no other employees would have been at work, deputies said.

After watching one video, Cuthbert sent a message to the person who posted the video to YouTube that said, "You are so cute!... Keep making vids! Send me a private vid longer, I am a big fan of yours!"

Cuthbert is being held in the Orange County Jail on $12,500 bail.

Cybersecurity Starts in High School with Tomorrow's Hires - Bloomberg

Sean Gallup/Getty Images

Security breaches experienced by institutions ranging from Facebook Inc. to the Federal Reserve are spurring spending on cybersecurity.

Five dozen teenagers hunched over computers in a hotel conference room near Washington, decrypting codes, cleaning malware and fending off network intrusions to score points in the finals of a national cybersecurity contest.

Just hours later, the high-school students got a glimpse of the labor market's appetite for their skills as sponsors such as network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc. described career opportunities. Internships start as young as 16 at Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC)., which reserves 20 spots for participants in the Air Force Association's contest.

'We're the largest provider of cybersecurity solutions to the federal government, so we know that we've got to help build that talent pipeline,' said Diane Miller, Northrop's program director for the CyberPatriot contest, on the sidelines of the March event. 'We just have a shortage of people applying' for the 700 positions currently open.

Security breaches experienced by institutions ranging from Facebook Inc. to the Federal Reserve are spurring spending on cybersecurity. President Barack Obama describes the threat as one of the nation's most serious perils, while the Department of Defense has said the Chinese military has targeted government computers. With few specialists trained to respond to evolving attacks and most universities still adjusting to requirements, demand is overwhelming supply.

'I cannot hire enough cybersecurity professionals, I can't find them, they're not qualified,' said Ryan Walters, who founded mobile data security company TerraWi Inc. in 2009. The company, based in McLean, Virginia, employs 12 people and plans to expand to 20.

CyberPatriot Contest

Walters, who says he has 22 years of experience in the field, helped prepare 48 students from Marshall Academy in Falls Church, Virginia, who competed in the CyberPatriot contest this year. Twelve made it to the finals. He says he's gotten calls from companies and government agencies to interview his protégés.

'I love the activity, it's like a passion,' said Ramon Martinez-Diaz, a 16-year-old sophomore coached by Walters. 'But it's also great that there are so many job openings.'

Listings for cybersecurity positions rose 73 percent in the five years through 2012, 3.5 times faster than postings for computer jobs as a whole, according to Boston-based Burning Glass, a labor market analytics firm that collects data from more than 22,000 online jobs sites.

Offers Reposted

'You have to scratch your head and ask whether the supply could possibly keep up with that,' Burning Glass Chief Executive Officer Matt Sigelman said in a phone interview. Data show 'employers literally just posting and reposting' their offers, he said.

There were 64,383 jobs related to cybersecurity listed for the twelve months through April, about 3 percent of all information technology positions, according to the company.

Rob Waaser found his skills in high demand. Just more than a month after graduating in December from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with a master's degree in information security technology and management, he started working at defense contractor Raytheon Co. Waaser chose to pursue a master's because he said the industry is technical enough to justify the extra training.

'Cybersecurity is a good field these days to get into -- there are a lot of people out there looking for talent,' said the 24-year-old, who got offers from all six of the potential employers he interviewed with. 'I really didn't have a problem finding job openings.'

Preparing Specialists

To prepare the next generation of specialists, the federal government's National Security Agency is working to strengthen college-level education through its National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations program, which gives a designation to universities that meet curriculum and other criteria.

Companies and government agencies are finding many candidates exiting college programs inadequately prepared for high-skill jobs crucial to cybersecurity, said Frank Reeder, co-founder of the Center for Internet Security in East Greenbush, New York, and former senior official at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget responsible for information policy.

'In the cybersecurity world, it's still a little bit of the Wild West,' he said. For today's gap, part of the solution is to train existing workers, he said.

Alan Paller, whose Bethesda, Maryland-based company SANS Institute provides such instruction, said many job candidates lack the hundreds of hours of lab experience needed to develop the highly-specific skills required.

'Fighter Pilots'

'We have a huge number of frequent flyers and a tiny number of fighter pilots,' Paller said. 'In the next war, people will be the tanks and the planes. We've got to be ready.'

The threat of cyber attacks has for the first time become a greater concern than terrorism, James Clapper, the top U.S. intelligence official, told the House Intelligence Committee during an April hearing. A spate of recent disclosures by corporations about security breaches include social network Facebook, which said it was targeted in a 'sophisticated attack' by hackers in January who installed malware on laptops used by company employees.

The Fed said in February that intruders breached a website used to stay in touch with banks during emergencies, though no critical operations were affected.

Companies and governments are boosting spending on cybersecurity. Obama's 2014 budget recommends more than $13 billion for computer network security, about $1 billion more than current levels, including a 21 percent increase at the Pentagon.

Computer Security

U.S. companies and public sector organizations will raise outlays on computer security to an estimated $89.1 billion in the fiscal year ending October 2013, more than double the 2006 level, according to data collected by the Ponemon Institute LLC. and analyzed for Bloomberg. The Traverse City, Michigan-based company conducts research on data protection and information security.

Each year JPMorgan Chase & Co. 'spends approximately $200 million to protect ourselves from cyberwarfare and to make sure our data are safe and secure,' with 600 people dedicated to it, Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon wrote last month in a letter to shareholders. 'This number will grow dramatically over the next three years.'

Increased awareness of cyber risks means more business for Boston-based Rapid7 LLC, which sells security software to small and medium companies and has more than tripled in size since 2011, now with 350 employees.

'Cultural Fit'

'The challenge for us is finding the balance of the skillset with the cultural fit,' Chief People Officer Christina Luconi said in a phone interview. 'There's a lot of really talented hackers or people with cybersecurity skills -- it's finding those folks who want to use their skills for good, not evil.'

As a result, workers the company goes after are often being courted by other employers as well, she says.

That shows up in pay: In a survey released February of more than 6,300 U.S. information security professionals, 62 percent had gotten a salary or benefits increase. Seven percent reported a raise of 10 percent or more, with the average worker earning $109,156. The data was collected in fourth quarter 2012 for ISC(2), a global not-for-profit organization headquartered in Clearwater, Florida, specializing in information security education and certifications.

Even those without college degrees are commanding good salaries. A participant in last year's CyberPatriot contest earned certifications and went from high-school to a job paying $62,000, said Bernie Skoch, the commissioner for the competition at the Air Force Association, a nonprofit, independent group that supports the service through educational and promotional programs.

Shaping Choices

Skoch said the goal was to get teenagers interested in science, technology, engineering and math. 'Every aspect of our economy is cyber-dependent,' he said. 'If we're not drawing enough people at a young age, where you can shape their choices into these technical fields, we won't be able to feed this technical workforce.'

The contest, which started as a pilot program in 2009 with eight Florida high-schools, attracted 1,226 teams from high-schools or institutions this year. Now, it is expanding.

'We learned that high school is too late for many students,' Skoch said. 'We need to excite them at middle school.'

Trial set for former NBA player in squatting case - Yahoo! Sports

PHOENIX (AP) -- A trial date has been set for a former NBA All-Star accused of squatting in a Paradise Valley home and then trying to list the place for rent on Craigslist.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said Wednesday that Chris Gatling has pleaded not guilty to two counts of theft and forgery, one count of taking the identity of another and one count of fraud.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for June 7, according to Jerry Cobb, a spokesman for the attorney's office. The trial will be Aug. 8

Gatling was accused of breaking into a key box and living in the home for nearly a year. A police report says the homeowners lived in California but had left the power on.

Gatling's attorney, Michael Alarid, has said the case is a misunderstanding. He has not been willing to elaborate.

The 45-year-old Gatling averaged 10.3 points in 11 seasons with Golden State, Miami, Dallas, New Jersey, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Denver and Cleveland.

'Survivor' Finale Tops Sunday As 'Revenge' Wraps Sluggishly - Variety

Sunday remains a lackluster night for the Big Four, with no show even sniffing a 3 demo rating last night and ABC seeing sluggish finale scores for 'Once Upon a Time' and, especially, 'Revenge.' CBS prevailed with its two-hour finale and post-show of 'Survivor: Caramoan.'

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, ABC followed 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (1.4 rating/5 share in adults 18-49, 6.3 million viewers overall) with the second-season finales of 'Once Upon a Time' (2.2/7 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) and 'Revenge' (1.6/4, 6.0 million viewers overall), the latter a two-hour installment.

'Once' placed second in its timeslot and matched its week-ago score, but will finish down about 30% from where it wrapped its rookie season in the same timeslot a year ago. And 'Revenge' was actually down from last week's 1.8 rating, though by airing for two hours (replacing the ineffectual 'Red Widow'), ABC had one of its stronger showings on a Sunday in a while. Final averages will suggest that 'Revenge' had a decent season ' it was up vs. its Wednesday average of a year ago heading into Sunday ' but ABC was clearly hoping it would do better as it slotted it to replace 'Desperate Housewives' as the Sunday anchor.

At CBS, '60 Minutes' (1.5/6 in 18-49, 10.1 million viewers overall) was up week to week, followed by the two-hour conclusion of the 26th edition of 'Survivor' (2.6/8 in 18-49, 10.0 million viewers overall) and reunion show (2.2/6 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall); because the finale extended until about 10:10 p.m., its numbers should rise a bit while the reunion's should dip. 'Survivor' was Sunday's No. 1 broadcast program in 18-49 and 25-54. The spring edition of the show last year finished with a 2.9 demo rating and 10.3 million viewers overall.

Fox opened with an hourlong episode of 'The Cleveland Show' (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.1 million viewers overall), which won't be returning to the net next season, followed by original episodes of 'The Simpsons' (1.9/6 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall), 'Bob's Burger's' (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.3million viewers overall), 'Family Guy' (2.4/7 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) and 'American Dad' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall). These were the season finales for 'Bob's Burgers' and 'American Dad,' with 'The Simpsons' and 'Family Guy' concluding next Sunday.

NBC's numbers are subject to revision due to a roughly 15-minute golf overrun. From 7 to 9 p.m., the net's stations avergaged a 1.0/3 in 18-49 and 3.8 million viewers overall for the golf and a repeat of 'The Voice.' And from 9 to 11 p.m., on time in all markets, 'Celebrity Apprentice' averaged a 1.3/3 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall; impacted by the 'Survivor' and 'Revenge' finales, it hit a season low. 'Apprentice' is expected to return to NBC, though.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 2.2/7; ABC, 1.7/5; Fox, 1.6/5; NBC, 1.1/3; Univision, 0.7/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 9.6 million; ABC, 6.4 million; NBC, 4.0 million; Fox, 3.4 million; Univision, 2.0 million.

Brothers of Cleveland kidnapping, rape suspect Ariel Castro speak out - NewsNet5.com

CLEVELAND - When Ariel Castro was arrested on charges of kidnapping and raping three women for more than a decade in his Cleveland home, police also arrested his two brothers, Pedro and Onil.

While the brothers haven't been charged in connection to the case, in the minds of many, all three men are monsters.

Last Thursday, police released Pedro and Onil Castro saying neither man had anything to do with the abductions and torture of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

For the first time since their release, both men sat down and talked with CNN's Martin Savidge about Ariel and their ordeal.

Both Castro brothers tell CNN they are grateful the women are finally free and safe, but they're haunted by missed clues.

Pedro and Onil both fear society will always think they knew of or had something to do with the women's kidnappings.

'The people out there that know me, they know that Onil Castro is not that person and has nothing to do with that'.No reason for anybody to think that I would ever do something like that. It's a shock to all my friends. They couldn't believe it.'

'Same. I, I,'I couldn't never think of doing anything like that. If I knew that my brother was doing this'I would call the cops because that ain't right'I would have reported it. Brother or no brother,' Pedro explained to CNN.

On May 6, frantic cries for help from Berry led to her rescue and then DeJesus and Knight. All three women are at home with family or friends and have requested privacy so they can readjust to life.

Meet Filomena Tobias, The Femme Fatale Who Flipped Off Joakim Noah - Chicagoist

The photo of the woman who came thisclose to puncturing Bulls center Joakim Noah's eardrum flipping him off during Tuesday night's loss to Miami became another of the Internet's viral treasures.

She also has a name and a pretty sordid backstory.

Filomena Tobias's identity was confirmed by her daughter to the SunSentinel this morning. Tobias and her family are Heat season ticket holders and Victoria Racanati said Tobias was 'having fun just like any other fan' when she decided to let Noah what she thought of him.

'All she has to say is that people need to get a life," Racanati added.

The story could have ended there, except that the Internet has a memory like an elephant. Tobias was married to Seth Tobias, an investment manager and CNBC talking head who drowned in his pool in 2007. The ensuing struggle over Seth Tobias's estate pitted Filomena (or Phyllis) against his brothers, who accused her of murdering him in a civil complaint.

In a New York Times article on Seth Tobias's death, a former assistant told police 'Filomena Tobias confessed to him that she had cajoled her husband, who was on a cocaine binge, into the water, promising him sex with a male go-go dancer know as "Tiger." A lawyer for Filomena Tobias has called the claims outrageous.' Tobias drained and resurfaced the pool a few days later. Her attorney disputed any claims she had anything to do with her husband's death.

Seth Tobias turned out to be Phyllis's fourth husband. Her third ex-husband, Jay Jacknin, is a divorce attorney who introduced her to Seth Tobias. In a 2008 New York magazine article on the Tobiases, Jacknin had this to say about his ex-wife.

'She had a great body,' he says. 'Women love her. Men find her fascinating. I just couldn't afford her.'

Jacknin also said Phyllis was 'on a cocktail of Xanax, Vicodin, and Ritalin and kept coke in the house.' She accused Jacknin of assault in 2003, but he told New York she was also prone to her own violent episodes that had him locking himself in the nanny's room.

Looking at that photo again we aren't thinking twice that Tobias may have considered chasing after Noah to the Bulls locker room.

Ann Hornaday reviews 'The Great Gatsby' - Washington Post

'It's like an amusement park.'

That's Nick Carraway, the wide-eyed, ever-present narrator of 'The Great Gatsby,' describing one of the legendary parties thrown by the movie's fabulously wealthy and elusive title character.

Video

"The Great Gatsby," one of the most anticipated movies of the year, opens Friday. Director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin, talk about the movie's eye-popping set and edgy soundtrack.

Critic rating:

Good

Opened: 05/10/2013

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Amitabh Bachchan, Elizabeth Debicki

Rated: PG-13

Looking for things to do?

Select one or more criteria to search

But Carraway could just as easily be referring to the very movie he finds himself in, a hyper-real, hyper-active, hyperbolic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel that spares no flower, flapper or fringe in bringing Jazz Age decadence to throbbing life. It takes a singular brand of chutzpah to consider perhaps the greatest piece of American literature of the 20th century and say, 'What this story needs is 3-D.' Australian director Baz Luhrmann is just that audacious, staging Fitzgerald's tale of reinvention and self-deception as a 21st century visual spectacle and multiculti musical mash-up of Jay-Z, George Gershwin and just about everything in between.

For all of Luhrmann's swagger, though, the net effect is akin to seeing 'The Great Gatsby' miniaturized, its characters carefully choreographed against storybook illustrations of overworked perfection. It's glib to suggest that Luhrmann has made a 'Great Gatsby' for idiots; it's more like he's made it for infants, who prefer their nourishment pre-masticated and their stories pictorialized by way of bright, arresting images (baubles you can try to grab are always nice, and help develop fine motor skills).

By no means is 'The Great Gatsby' a disaster: Even at its most shallow, the film rescues Jay Gatsby as a largely sympathetic, romantic figure rather than a cynically ironic one. But neither is it necessary. Childlike, fetishistic and painfully literal, Luhrmann's experiment proves once again that it's Fitzgerald's writing ' not his plot, his characters or his grasp of material detail ' that has always made 'Gatsby' great.

Luhrmann acknowledges this fact with his use of familiar words from Fitzgerald's text, which flit, swim and scatter across the screen at pivotal moments. But, like most of his stylistic flourishes, they're deployed more as an effect than a homage. As for the characters who populate 'The Great Gatsby' ' the enigmatic title character, his nouveau riche friends, the old-money enclave he seeks to conquer and the woman who embodies his most cherished aspirations ' they're little more than live-action props in Luhrmann's curiously lavish depiction of the wages of lavish living.

Carey Mulligan brings less come-hither effervescence than glum self-reflection to the heedless Southern debutante Daisy Buchanan; if Joel Edgerton plays Daisy's husband, Tom, with too-rough edges (he's a brute but still nominally well bred), he embodies the role with muscle-bound, narrow-eyed menace. As Carraway ' whose reminiscences Luhrmann puts in an utterly gratuitous framing device of a sanitorium therapy session ' Tobey Maguire is his usual recessive presence, barely registering as either a dynamic part of the events he describes or their watchful witness.

Appropriately enough, Gatsby himself remains offstage as 'The Great Gatsby' gets underway, finally making his dramatic entrance against a backdrop of fireworks to the strains of 'Rhapsody in Blue.' There are hints of Orson Welles's Charles Foster Kane in Leonardo DiCaprio's interpretation of Jay Gatsby (born James Gatz), whom he plays with a playful glint, a boyish, athletic bounce and labored diction that, while appropriate to the shaky provenance of a parvenu, sounds less a clever characterization than DiCaprio's own ongoing struggle to convincingly play a grown-up.

Still, DiCaprio manages to possess and convey a human heartbeat within an otherwise unmemorable ensemble of players who, as arrayed throughout Luhrmann's fussed-over production, never come to fully inhabited life. Luhrmann uses 3-D less as a stunt than as a way to gain depth of field (attained in 'Citizen Kane' ' that most 'Gatsby'-esque of stories ' through camera and lighting), as well as a comment on novelty, technology and shifting aesthetic expectations. All of that makes perfect theoretical sense, but results in a film that is more performative than immersive, keeping the audience at a dreamlike, emotionally distant remove. Like Nick, we're never quite 'within or without' the opulent, ethically compromised world he writes about.

There are sensual pleasures to be found in 'The Great Gatsby' ' Nick's vine-covered cottage next to Gatsby's Gothic mansion, a confection-filled tea party where Jay and Daisy awkwardly reconnect, the spangly, noisy free-for-alls on Gatsby's famous blue lawn. But for all its devotion to surface sheen, Luhrmann's 'Gatsby' is strangely un-beautiful, never becoming something genuinely new rather than an elaborately illustrated retelling.

When hysteria finally gives way to fatalism, the film itself seems to deflate, tacitly suggesting that the story's most delicate, complex moral reckonings are less interesting than flagrant consumerism and excess. Despite timely relevance, enduring truths and Luhrmann's earnest efforts to make 'The Great Gatsby' jump off the screen, he ' and we ' finally can't help but fail to grasp it.

Two stars. PG-13. At area theaters. Contains some violent images, sexual content, smoking, partying and brief profanity. 142 minutes.

Avoiding Abduction: 3 Tips from Jaycee Dugard's Therapist - TIME

Dr. Rebecca Bailey co-authored the forthcoming book Safe Kids, Smart Parents (on sale July 2, pre-order now)

Rebecca Bailey is a psychologist whohashelped families like Jaycee Dugard's reconnect again after abductions and other abusive situations through a groupcalledTransitioning Families. She is also theco-author of a forthcoming book calledSafe Kids, Smart Parents, due out July 2.On May 7, the day after three women who had been missing for about a decade were finally found alive in a home near downtown Cleveland,Bailey talked to TIME about how parents can protect their children from potential abductors and abusers by talking early and often about appropriate interactions with strangers.Ultimately, Bailey says 'the inspiration for this book came from Jaycee and her family, and the realization that these non-family abductions often are unpreventable, and nobody should feel blamed.'

How can parents make sure an incident like the Cleveland kidnapping ordeal doesn't happen to their families?

It's a terribly scary, anxiety-provoking topic, but the worst thing [for a parent] to do is to stick your head in the sand. We need to help give our kids the skills to deal with a variety of challenges, [from situations] as rare as a stranger abduction or a non-family abduction, to [situations as commonplace as] dealing with coaches and dealing with unwanted approaches'and to be honest'sexual approaches and exploitation.

Can you talk more specifically about how parents should address these topics with their children at each age level?

I look at it as teaching a kid how to swim; you take a kid to the pool, you put them in floaties in the beginning, and then when they're older, you give them swimming lessons to teach them how to deal with the challenges of being in the water, and then you get a little more comfortable with them being on their own.

Each kid may be at a different developmental stage, but with younger kids, [parents should start by] teaching them to be aware of their environment, like helping a kid know [his/her] address and phone number. But we have [talked to] middle school groups, and it's unbelievable how many kids in the classrooms will have experienced a scary event and nottalk to their parents about it'whetherthey've been followed home by somebody as they were walking home from school or walking to the store. [The scary event] may be as innocuous as a teenager shouting at them, or it could be assinister as somebody offering them a ride.

We live in this world where there are lots of scary images and events, and sometimes I think parents [mistakenly] believe kids are unaware, and they decide that if you sweep it away, it won't affect them.

What can young adults do to stay safe when they're out on their own?

In a few of these non-family abductions, a car has pulled up next to them.If someone pulls over and asks for directions, it's important that kids, [whether they're in] middle school [or] high school, understand they don't need to go up to the car window. They can say, 'No thank you,' or 'I'm busy,' or say nothing. So the whole point is to take the fear out of these topics that are not necessarily about an abduction, but also about unwanted approaches, dealing with things as explicit as sexual comments in the mall or putting yourself in a compromising position. One of the things we know about exploitation is that sometimes it's not uncommon for the case to start with what a child thinks is a simple picture by a so-called boyfriend. Then that picture turns up the next day with a note on their cell phone saying, 'We'll take more. We'll show these to your parents if you don't do X, Y or Z.'

Talking to children in an age-appropriate way about these topics is really important. [Parents] need to know that these children are aware of media [coverage] around them.Even if parents don't put on the TV in their home, [kids] are [encountering the news] in the supermarket or on radio, so talk, talk, talk, talk, talk to your kids.

Click here to reada full excerpt from Safe Kids, Smart Parentson TIME.com, and here to readthe book's forward, written by Jaycee Dugard's mother Terry Probyn.

Klay Thompson shoots the Warriors past the Spurs to win Game 2, even the series - NBCSports.com

In many ways, Game 2 between the Warriors and the Spurs was similar to Game 1. Golden State got out to a large lead behind one of its guards shooting the lights out, and San Antonio was stuck playing from behind the rest of the way.

The first game of the series saw the Spurs go on an incredible late run to erase their opponent's early success, and they were able to pull it out after more than one overtime session. There would be no such heroics on this night, as the Warriors held off San Antonio 100-91 to steal home court advantage and even the series at a game apiece.

In Game 1, Stephen Curry was the one doing the damage for the Warriors. But after a decent first half in Game 2, he was largely held in check the rest of the night.

Klay Thompson was the killer for Golden State from the very start, pouring in 29 first half points while knocking down seven of his eight attempts from three-point distance. The Warriors built a lead of 19 points by halftime on the strength of Thompson's hot hand, and unlike the first game of the series, were able to get just enough in the second half to keep the Spurs at bay.

Thompson finished with a game high 34 points and 14 rebounds, on 13-of-26 shooting, including 8-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc. He also did an excellent job defensively in helping to limit Tony Parker, who finished just 7-of-17 from the field with 20 points. Thompson fouled out near the end of regulation in Game 1 just before the Spurs embarked on their huge comeback, and his defense was sorely missed.

The Warriors cooled considerably in the second half, as Thompson and Curry combined to shoot 5-of-19 from the field over the game's final two periods. The Spurs once again made a run, and twice cut the lead to six in the fourth quarter. But despite the overall low shooting percentage that Golden State suffered through in the second half, the team managed to find an answer offensively each time ' first with a three from Draymond Green, and later with an incredible scoop shot finger roll from Curry with under four minutes to play that extended his team's lead back to eight.

San Antonio tried to shoot their way back into it quickly from distance, yet managed to connect on just five of its 14 second half attempts from three-point range.

There are a lot of positives the Warriors will take with them back home to Oracle Arena for the next two games. They were able to get both of their guards going separately in each of the first two games, and they showed maturity in Game 2 by not collapsing again as they had in Game 1 of the series.

For the Spurs, the lesson is clear. If you let Curry or Thompson get loose early, they'll torch you for a big performance that will be extremely difficult to stop. Both Mark Jackson and Gregg Popovich had their own take on the Warriors' stellar shooters after this one.

'I thought it was polite of them to at least take turns and not both be on fire on the same night,' Popovich joked.

Jackson, however, was much more proud in praise of his guys.

'I've said, I've got the greatest shooting backcourt that's ever played the game,' Jackson said. 'Call my bluff.'

The Spurs would be wise not to do that for the remainder of this series.

Ray Harryhausen Dead: Visual Effects Legend Dies At 92 Years Old (VIDEO) - Huffington Post

Ray Harryhausen, the visual effects pioneer who worked on classic films including "Mighty Joe Young" (1949), "It Came From Beneath The Sea" (1955) and "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963) died today, according to a statement from his family. The American writer and producer was 92 years old.

Harryhausen first became fascinated with animation after seeing Willis O'Brien's work in "King Kong," which he saw in 1933 with his childhood friend Ray Bradbury. The two soon joined a science fiction league together and became lifelong friends. Harryhousen's first major motion picture, "Mighty Joe Young," ended up winning anOscar for Best Special Effects in 1949.

One of Harryhausen's greatest achievements was his the creation of his own animation technique, which he called DynaMation. The purpose was to allow live action to be "split" so that a model could be appear to coexist and interact directly with the actors. The technique itself is far more complicated, however.

Harryhausen's family released a statement outlining his past projects and accomplishments:

"Harryhausen's genius was in being able to bring his models alive. Whether they were prehistoric dinosaurs or mythological creatures, in Ray's hands they were no longer puppets but became instead characters in their own right, just as important as the actors they played against and in most cases even more so."

The statement also contains lovely words from the biggest names in filmmaking, all heavily inspired by Ray's innovation and imagination. Stephen Spielberg wrote: "Ray, your inspiration goes with us forever."
